A few months ago, I was saddened to discover that one of our recent windstorms had broken off this hemlock tree along the path at Willis Tucker Park. I once came upon a coyote sleeping in the warm afternoon sun at the base of this tree and from then on called it the coyote tree. It stood strong and tall, a pillar of year round green against a background of deciduous trees.
When I visited the park in December, I was happy to see the stump of this tree getting some new life. Notice the reddish path up the trunk where a woodpecker has been at work, roughing up the already rough bark.
